What are they?

The stonemason's signs

They are the inscriptions on the stones of the churches. They are so humble that most visitors of Romanesque churches don’t realize their existence. There is a widely expanded thesis that they are marks to identify the stonemason, the amount of work he had done and to pay him according to their production. There is another thesis about being marks for assembling the blocks during construction. There are many reasons against these interpretations and its falsity is demonstrated in this work.
